At the request of the Earl of Dalhousie, governor of Nova Scotia, the lumbering center of New Ross was established in 1816 by Capt. William Ross and 172 former soldiers of the Nova Scotia Fencibles. Anxious to settle the interior uplands of the province, the governor rewarded one enterprising settler with a piano that four soldiers delivered from Chester, 24 kilometres (15 mi.) away.
